What happened
In 1876, O'Reilly and Archbishop John J. Williams of Boston purchased the 'Boston Pilot' from its financially distressed owner, Patrick Donahoe. Under their joint stewardship, the newspaper became the major Irish-American publication in the United States, with a national weekly circulation of over 100,000.
Literary impact
Owning the 'Pilot' gave O'Reilly editorial independence and the resources to champion the causes he held dear, including Irish Home Rule and African-American civil rights. His dual role as publisher and poet allowed him to shape the cultural and political consciousness of a generation, and his editorials often explored themes that would find expression in his verse.
