Poet involved
What happened
Valéry completed his secondary education at the lycée in Montpellier and obtained his baccalauréat ès lettres in 1887–1888. He had developed strong interests in literature, drawing, music, architecture and mathematics alongside his formal studies. Montpellier remained the intellectual setting of his adolescence and early literary development.
Literary impact
His unusually broad intellectual interests helped establish the combination of poetry, philosophy, mathematics, art and music that would characterise his mature thought. His education also encouraged the habit of independent study that later became central to his notebooks and essays.
