Valéry begins studying law in Montpellier
Poet involved
What happened
Valéry began studying law at the University of Montpellier in 1888, completing the course with a licence in 1892. Although law was his formal subject, he remained deeply engaged with mathematics, music, philosophy and literature. His years in Montpellier also brought him into contact with other young writers.
Literary impact
The legal training contributed to the disciplined, analytical cast of Valéry's later intellectual work. More importantly, the contrast between professional study and his private intellectual pursuits helped form his lifelong interest in method, precision and conscious thought.
