What happened

While studying in Montpellier, Valéry published his first known poem, 'Rêve', in the Revue maritime de Marseille in 1889. He was still a young law student and had not yet entered the Paris literary world. The publication marked the beginning of his public career as a poet.

Literary impact

This early publication established poetry as a serious part of Valéry's identity before his later withdrawal from verse. It also placed him within the French literary culture that would soon lead him towards Symbolism and the circle surrounding Stéphane Mallarmé.
