Valéry enters Mallarmé's literary circle

Poet involved

What happened

During a stay in Paris in 1891, Valéry finally met Stéphane Mallarmé and became associated with his celebrated Tuesday gatherings in the rue de Rome. Pierre Louÿs had helped establish the connection. Valéry also encountered writers including Joris-Karl Huysmans and absorbed the atmosphere of the Symbolist literary world.

Literary impact

Mallarmé became one of the decisive intellectual and poetic influences on Valéry. The encounter strengthened his interest in highly controlled language, suggestion, symbolism and the relationship between consciousness and poetic form, all of which remained important throughout his career.
